Competition for light,Unlike many of the other resources considered in this book, the availability of light is never uniform in a habitat, and cannot be made so by any mixing process. Although light has horizontal components of variation, its most obvious inhomogeneity is vertical: illumination in nearly all ecosystems comes mostly from above.

Resource competition and evolution,When individuals experience resource depletion it matters little whether the consumption responsible was carried out by members of the same or of other species. Therefore, approaches to studying interspecific competition may be carried over to studying evolution in response to the selective pressures of competition for resources.
