描述5) To what extent do events occurring during regeneration re semble those seen in development? Questions like these remain open, particularly in relation to the mammalian central nervous system and to the effects of lesions or disease. The first chapters of this volume are concerned primarily with normal and abnormal development of the nervous system. New concepts have emerged over the past few years as a result of experiments made on the development of the higher nervous system in mammals. Thus, the principles of cell death, competition, selective retraction of specific processes, and the effects of abnormalities on the development of the rest of the system have now been extensively investigated. In addition, considerable information is available about biochemical changes during normal and abnormal development in the human. At the other end of the scale, in invertebrates it is now possible to follow cell lineage and to define the origin and fate of a sin gle neuron of known function together with its processes. While an understanding of development is clearly important for studying basic mechanisms of repair and regeneration, one cannot expect the processes to be identical or ev

Factors That Influence Neural Development in Nematodes, tically controlled temporal signals. If the principles of neural development in nematodes are similar to those in other organisms, specific conditions involving available cell types and positional and/or temporal cues must be satisfied for neural regeneration to be possible.

Regeneration of Synapses, ogenetically important information between pre- and post-synaptic partners. Factors already known to participate in this exchange at the skeletal neuromuscular junction are activity, soluble “trophic” agents, components of the extracellular matrix, and products of nerve degeneration.

Cell Recognition and Specific Synapse Formation, brates, manipulations of regenerating and target populations of cells have provided detailed information about both the selectivity and specificity of connections. The basis of such cellular recognition is unknown, but may at some stage involve a molecular affinity between cell surfaces.

Clinical Evaluation of Injury and Recovery, brain structure. Positron emission tomography measures local brain metabolism, and nuclear magnetic resonance techniques are used to determine local tissue concentrations of various metabolites. The potential role of these new methods in the clinical evaluation of injury and recovery are discussed.

Temporal Changes After Spinal Cord Injury, nhanced. In the period 10–30 days after transection, many systems show enhanced function. There is substantial variability in events occurring at longer intervals. At present it is impossible to make generalizations concerning changes which occur in the various systems whose neural circuitry is in the distal stump.

Molecular Events in Axonal Regeneration, after axonal injury, their failure to regenerate their axons may be a consequence of the inability of the CNS to accomplish one of the steps in the sequence that leads from axon injury to the expression of growth-related genes.
