描述J. M. Polak and S. R. Bloom For some time Experientia has published, as a unique feature, interdis ciplinary multi-author reviews, giving a comprehensive overview of sub jects regarded as ‘growing edges‘ of science. The enthusiasm shown by the readers was contagious and thus it was felt necessary to compile a special volume dealing with the novel aspects of regulatory peptides. This book covers some of the growing areas in regulatory peptide research and, although it is based on the original volume of Experientia, it is expanded and updated. The topic of ‘regulatory peptides‘ is relatively young and has grown at an unprecedented pace, from the embryonic conception of ‘gut hor mones‘ or ‘brain neuropeptides‘ some 15 years ago to the realisation that these active pep tides are found, almost without exception, in every part of l8 23 the body in all vertebrate and many invertebrate species • Why the term ‘regulatory peptides‘? It represents a convenient label encompassing both the active peptides present in nerves, which are re leased as (putative) neurotransmitters, and those in endocrine cells, which act locally or at a distance as circulating hormones, these being the l8 main co

The use of cell and tissue culture techniques in the study of regulatory peptidesbe different types of culture preparation and give examples where cultures have been used to examine peptide synthesis, storage, secretion and receptor localisation, as well as the short-term and trophic actions of regulatory peptides.

Peptides and epithelial growth regulation. The availability of recombinant epidermal growth factor (EGF) has recently enabled us to demonstrate a powerful trophic response to infused EGF throughout the gastrointestinal tract. The increasing availability of peptides will eventually allow the rigorous . evaluation of the trophic role of these potentially very important peptides.

Regulatory peptides in the respiratory systemw and microvascular permeability. If released by an axon reflex mechanism these peptides may be involved in the pathogenesis of asthma. Other peptides, such as galanin and neuropeptide Y, are also present but their function is not yet known.

Hybridisation histochemistryuld be selected for specific objectives. With reference to published procedures and our own extensive experience, we have evaluated fixatives, probes, labels and other aspects of the technique critical to the preservation and hybridisation . of mRNA and detection and quantitation of hybrids.

Regulatory peptides in the mammalian urogenital systemsmooth muscle activity and blood flow, while other peptides (substance P, CGRP) seem to be sensory transmitters. It is likely that impaired function of the peptidergic nerves is involved in sexual dysfunction such as male impotence.

Regulatory peptide receptors: Visualization by autoradiographylarly the problem of ‘mismatch’ between endogenous peptides and receptors, the existence of multiple receptors for a given peptide family and the use of peptide receptor autoradiography in human tissues are also reviewed.
