描述This book is open access under a CC BY-NC 2.5 license..Thisbook provides an unprecedented synthesis of the current status ofscientific and management knowledge regardingglobal rangelands and the major challenges that confront them. It hasbeen organized around three major themes. The first summarizes theconceptual advances that have occurred in the rangeland profession. Thesecond addresses the implications of these conceptualadvances to management and policy. The third assesses several majorchallenges confronting global rangelands in the 21.st. century. This book will compliment applied range management textbooks bydescribing the conceptual foundation on which the rangelandprofession is based. It has been written to be accessible to a broadaudience, including ecosystem managers, educators, students and policymakers. The content is founded on the collective experience, knowledgeand commitment of 80 authors who have workedin rangelands throughout the world. Their collective contributionsindicate that a more comprehensive framework is necessary to address thecomplex challenges confronting global rangelands.  Rangelands representadaptive social-ecological systems, in whichsocietal values

Rangeland Systems: Foundation for a Conceptual Framework, iginated from a substantial shift in underlying ecological theory and a gradual progression of natural resource management models. The progression of management models reflects a shift from humans as resource users to humans as resource stewards and it represents the backdrop against which this book

Woody Plant Encroachment: Causes and Consequencesas been documented to occur at different times but at comparable rates in rangelands of the Americas, Australia, and southern Africa. The objectives of this chapter are to review (1) the process of WPE and its causes, (2) consequences for ecosystem function and the provision of services, and (3) the

Ecohydrology: Processes and Implications for Rangelandseceive from ecosystems. We focus on (1) the regulating services of water distribution, water purification, and climate regulation; (2) the supporting services of water and nutrient cycling and soil protection and restoration; and (3) the provisioning services of water supply and biomass production.

Soil and Belowground Processestremely diverse, but an emerging understanding is that paradigms developed in more mesic forest ecosystems may not be applicable. Vascular plants, biological soil crusts, and the soil microbial community are the three major functional groups of organisms that influence rangeland soils through their

Heterogeneity as the Basis for Rangeland Management predictability in natural systems (steady-state management often applied through a command-and-control paradigm). Examples of applications of traditional command and control in natural resource management include wildfire suppression, fences to control large ungulate movements, predator elimination

Nonequilibrium Ecology and Resilience Theoryl stability and linear successional dynamics. These alternative interpretations indicate that ecosystem dynamics are strongly influenced by disturbance, heterogeneity, and existence of multiple stable states. The nonequilibrium persistent model indicates that plant production and livestock numbers a

Rangelands as Social–Ecological Systemsamework is not a research methodology or a checklist to identify problems. It is a conceptual framework designed to keep both the social and ecological components of a system in focus so that the interactions between them can be scrutinized for drivers of change and causes of specific outcomes.
