Approximately 450 new cases (~ 8% of all childhood tumors) are diagnosed annually in the United States (. et al. 1978; . et al. 1983; . and . 1986).

Approximately 1700 children below 21 years of age present with primary CNS tumors annually in the United States, 95% of which originate within the brain (. et al. 1985).
