Qualitative properties of eigenfunctions of classically chaotic Hamiltonian systems, the eigenfunctions: “scars” of higher wavefunction density surround the special periodic orbits. Finally a theory is presented for the scars, showing that they must exist, and relating them directly to the special periodic orbits. These same periodic orbits cause level density fluctuations.

Spectral statistics of scale invariant systems,tems, are described by the semiclassical limit of the fluctuating part of the level density. It is shown that the transition to the chaotic regime can be described in the semiclassical limit. Finally, we construct a random matrix model that describes well the short range behaviour of all statistics studied.
