It provides an overview of the light reactions and electrontransfers in both oxygenic and anoxygenic photosynthesis. The scope ofthe book is characterized by the time frame in which the lightreactions and the subsequent electron transfers take place, namelybetween <=10.-12. and >=10.-3. second. The book isdivided into five parts: An Overview; Bacterial Photosynthesis;Photosystem II & Oxygen Evolution; Photosystem I; and ProtonTransport and Photophosphorylation. In discussing the structure andfunction of various protein complexes, we begin with an introductorychapter, followed by chapters on light-harvesting complexes, theprimary electron donors and the primary electron acceptors, andfinally the secondary electron donors. The discussion on electronacceptors is presented in the order of their discovery to convey asense of history, in parallel with the advancement in instrumentationof increasing time resolution. The book includes a large number ofstereo pictures showing the three-dimensional structure of variousphotosynthetic proteins, which can be easily
