Unfortunately, and despite the fact that hip fractures are mostly a consequence of this process, and apart from the first edition of this book, there are few publications about this subject. .The first edition of this book demonstrated that there is a need to understand the particular features of osteoporosis in older persons, which is the main aim of this book. The institutions where the authors are affiliated are highly recognized as the main centers in aging bone research. As an innovation, the second edition includes some aspects of muscle and bone interaction focusing of the impact of age-related muscle loss (sarcopenia) on the pathogenesis of falls and fractures in older persons. As in the previous edition, this book is expected to be the reference guide for geriatricians, g

Aging and Bone,t aspects will be considered: decreased number of osteoblasts, increasing adipogenesis and significant osteoblast/osteocytes apoptosis during the aging process in bone. Other aspects of bone aging has been addressed in recent reviews [1, 2].

The Orthogeriatrics Model of Care, ustain fragility fractures are older adults; more than 90 % of hip fractures occur in individuals who are 65 or older [1]. The risk of hip fracture doubles with every decade after the age of 50 [2], so that a woman who reaches the age of 90 years has a one in three chance of sustaining a hip fracture [3].

Fracture Epidemiology Among Individuals 75+,Fractures contribute significantly to morbidity and mortality of older individuals. Approximately 75 % of all osteoporotic fractures occur among seniors age 65 and older [1], and 1 in 2 women and 1 in 5 men age 50 are expected to sustain a fracture in their remaining life time [2].
