The principles of organoselenium chemistry are traced back to their origins. A survey on organoselenium compounds is combined with a short introduction to the various chapters of this book.

Selenium Compounds as Ligands and Catalysts,ands to some transition metalcatalyzed reactions and also as procatalysts for asymmetric diethylzinc addition to aldehydes are reviewed. Recent results of catalytic reactions using some organoselenium compounds such as allylic oxidation of alkenes and its asymmetric version as well as epoxidation of alkenes are also summarized.
