Demonstration of a Triple Bistable-Element Loop Circuit for a Digital Parallel All-Optical ComputerThree optically bistable ZnSe interference filters have been operated in a cascaded loop. This configuration,which with various modifications can form the basis of an all-optical digital parallel processor. has been used to show that, for the first time, indefinitely extensible logic is possible using an intrinsic bistable system.

This may imply that nonlinear optical elements acting as threshold devices will need to be capable of accepting large numbers of inputs. In general, this will require highly accurate optical threshold devices, and a sacrifice of the intrinsic reliability of purely digital systems.
