Some properties,The SWE have the same appearance as the Euler equations for compressible flow in aerodynamics. It is important to be aware of this similarity, because it opens the vast body of experience with the numerical solution of the Euler equations for application to the SWE.

Discretization in space,In this chapter, the spatial discretization of the shallow-water equations is discussed. The most common approach is that of finite differences, in which the region of interest is covered by a rectangular grid with grid sizes Δx, Δ. and the spatial derivatives are approximatedby finite differences.

Effects of space discretization on wave propagation,The solution of the discretized equations derived in ch. 6 will not be the same as the continuous one, but hopefully close to it. The question of numerical accuracy can be approached in a number of ways: analysis of the truncation error, experimental numerical convergence analysis and wave-propagation analysis for the linearized equations.
