描述This book is primarily intended for undergraduates in mathematics, the physical sciences and engineering. It introduces students to most of the techniques forming the core component of courses in numerical analysis. The text is divided into eight chapters which are largely self-contained. However, with a subject as intricately woven as mathematics, there is inevitably some interdependence between them. The level of difficulty varies and, although emphasis is firmly placed on the methods themselves rather than their analysis, we have not hesitated to include theoretical material when we consider it to be sufficiently interesting. However, it should be possible to omit those parts that do seem daunting while still being able to follow the worked examples and to tackle the exercises accompanying each section. Familiarity with the basic results of analysis and linear algebra is assumed since these are normally taught in first courses on mathematical methods. For reference purposes a list of theorems used in the text is given in the appendix.

Ordinary differential equations: boundary value problems,lue problem and the associated conditions are called .. The simplest type of boundary conditions are . for given numbers α and β. However, more general conditions such as . for given numbers λ., α. and ±. (. = 1,2) are sometimes imposed. Sufficient conditions for the existence and uniqueness of such problems may be found in Keller (1968).

Eigenvalues and eigenvectors,cluding quadratic forms, differential systems and non-linear optimization, and can be used to solve problems from such diverse fields as economics, information theory, structural analysis, electronics and control theory.

Methods of approximation theory,bed in this chapter are of considerable practical value, some are also studied for their theoretical importance. In particular, the material on polynomial interpolation will be used in subsequent chapters to derive numerical methods for differentiation, integration and the solution of ordinary differential equations.

Non-linear algebraic equations,generally decreases as the method proceeds, enabling the root to be calculated to any prescribed accuracy. Examples are the bisection and false position methods. One-point methods, on the other hand, generate a single sequence of numbers which converge to one of the roots. Examples are the fixed point, Newton and secant methods.
