描述This volume contains the lectures presented by invited speakers at the IV La Rlibida International Summer School on Nuclear Physics. This was the IV edition of a summer school organized by our group every three years on topics related to nuclear physics. This Summer School was aimed mainly at young nuclear physicists, both theoreticians and experimentalists, engaged in research work at predoctoral or recent postdoctoral level. The topics treated in the three previous editions of the School were: "Heavy Ion Collisions", "Theory of Nuclear Structure and Reactions" and "Nuclear As­ trophysics". This year‘s School was entitled "Nuclear Physics at the Borderlines". Special emphasis was placed on those topics along which nuclear physics is ex­ pected to develop in the next few years. The aim of the School was to provide the attendants with an opportunity to get into close contact with experienced researchers and listen to their account of the present state-of-the-art in nuclear physics and the main future lines of development.

Quarks in nuclei,their applications to actual problems in experimental and theoretical nuclear physics. In particular we discuss exotic nuclei, quark matter, deep inelastic scattering, proton spin,... and their relation to such phenomena as quark Pauli blocking, strangeness enhancement, nuclear structure functions, bosonization,...

Chiral Models of Low Energy QCD,adron is better described by quark models. We show how to couple the two processes. We also relate the scaling of effective lagrangians, based on the QCD anomaly, to changes in the quark constituent masses.

Heavy-Ion Interactions at Intermediate Energies,eal and imaginary parts are essentially governed by the behaviour of the microscopic nucleon-nucleon scattering at the corresponding energy. Examples of predicted optical potentials at different energies are presented.

Recent Spectroscopy of Exotic Nuclear Shapes at High Spin,1000. This implies that the nuclear moment of inertia can remain unchanged with respect to the addition or removal of a particular nucleon. The next generation of γ-ray detector arrays for the 1990’s is discussed.
