Essential continuum mechanics,Continuum mechanics is concerned with the global behaviour of substances under external loads. Here we restrict ourselves mainly to solids, although some examples later cover a wider class of substances. The external loads act either through the surface of a body (contact loads) or by action at a distance (gravitation, for example).
