Shape Memory Alloys, orm into one another. These phase changes can be produced either by thermal actions or by mechanical actions. The striking properties of shape memory alloys result from interactions between mechanical and thermal actions [23, 146, 211].

d on practical problems in mechanical engineering, the author develops in this book the fundamental concepts of non-smooth thermomechanics and introduces the necessary background material needed to deal with mechanics involving discontinuities and non-smooth constraints. Book 2002roduces the necessary background material needed to deal with mechanics involving discontinuities and non-smooth constraints. From this point, powerful methods for the applied mathematician and the mechanical engineer are derived, and applied to numerous cases including collisions of deformable and

deformable solids, shape memory alloys, damage of materials, soil freezing, supercooling and solid--liquid phase changes, to name but a few. This book will be of great value to both the researcher and practitioner, but it can also be used as an advanced text for students in civil and mechanical engineering.978-3-642-08578-9978-3-662-04800-9

Unilateral Contact. Contact with Adhesion, state of the bonds between the two solids. Because we want to remain on the macroscopic or engineering level, we choose the surface fraction ß of active or unbroken bonds as a state quantity together with the gap between the solids. The damage of composite materials has been investigated from this point of view [8].

Collision of Rigid Bodies. Multiple Collisions, restitution coefficient is attributed. In this chapter, the same approach is followed in order to produce a simple, usable collision theory. The only improvement is a step toward continuum mechanics. The idea is developed that a system made of two rigid bodies is deformable because the distance between the two solids can change.

Evolution of Two Deformable Solids with Collisions,e velocity discontinuities. The principle of virtual power in this situation is favourably replaced by its expression integrated with respect to time: the principle of virtual work. We assume that the two solids collide on conformal surfaces [157]. Thus the contact surface has a nonzero Lebesgue measure during the collision which is instantaneous.

,Solid—Liquid Phase Change. Supercooling. Soil Freezing, level are investigated. Supercooling is described in the first section. The classical ice-water phase change is investigated in the second section. Then the phase changes in porous media with applications to soil freezing are investigated, together with phase changes in the presence of solutes and dissipative phase changes.
