A neural state machine for iconic language representation,n and use grounded internal states. To illustrate these points we introduce an architectural concept (the Neural State Machine Model — NSMM) which allows a clear formalisation of the concept of iconic representations. Examples of the application of this concept to representation of visuo-linguistic data are given.

Variable binding using serial order in recurrent neural networks,redicates which are represented by distributed patterns. This process makes it possible to represent conditional rules with a good degree of generalization. Distributed representations and temporal order offer a simpler treatment of variable binding than localist and spatial models do.

A node splitting algorithm that reduces the number of connections in a Hamming distance classifyingconnections. A comparison of different approaches to minimize the total number of connections is presented. Finally, the limitations of pattern classification by Hamming or vector distances are discussed.

Biophysics of neural computation,omputation is carried out in converging and diverging lines between different levels of the nervous system. Such an architecture makes possible some interesting schemes for information processing, including the computation of explicit parameters, resolution and reliability.

Biologically motivated approach to face recognition,set that is robust against translations is extracted by a global reduction operation and used for a search in an image database. The method was applied on a database of 205 face images of 30 persons and a recognition rate of 94% was achieved.
