The Effects of Chronic Hypoxaemia Upon the Structure of the Human Carotid Bodyreas others found enlarged carotid bodies accompanied by a proliferation of sustentacular and Schwann cells (Habeck, 1986; Heath et a1.,1982; Smith et al., 1982). It may be that these differences are related to the aetiology of the hypoxaemia and perhaps its duration.
