Theessays, which present wide-ranging historical considerations ofnegation in light of recent developments in poststructuralism andpostmodernism, range over many of the siginificant texts in whichnegation figures prominently. In addition, the four sections of the book bring togethermajor critical interventions on, among others, negative meaning, unrecognizability, elenctic negation, apocalypse, nihilism, negationand gender, and denegation. All the essays involve close attention tokey texts by major authors, including William Shakespeare, HenryJames, Federico García Lorca, Samuel Beckett, Thomas Bernhard,Walt Whitman, E.M. Forster’s Ghosts: , and the Emptying of NarrativeFor these caves to which “nothing attaches” were once full of narrative stuff. Things happened there. Thus I want to explore what happens to a fiction that is emptied out. What traces remain, what work do they do? What other traces, other ghosts move in the text?

Nothing Doing: The Repudiation of Action in Beckett’s ,something next” exists from the beginning of Beckett’s career and “evasive strategies” similar to those described in Beckett’s later prose1 are in fact at work in the 1934 collection, as I will show by way of a reading of the volume’s opening story, “Dante and the Lobster,” supplemented by brief references to other stories from the collection.

Putting on the Feminine: Gender and Negativity in , and ,imicry and parody, can constitute a specific strategy of feminist negativity aimed at displacing and relocating various instances of gender construction within which women have found themselves defined in terms of denial, absence, and/or opposition—that is, in terms of negation.

The Shadow Life: Negation, Nihilism, and Insanity in Thomas Bernhard’s ,ies an act that destroys or reverses the sign of its object. It has the apparent simplicity of a negative prefix (in-, dis-, non- or the minus sign), which cancels out the prior meaning. This is a sanitary notion of negation, as if the act of negating achieves a pure reversal, leaving no trace of what was prior and no remainder.

“Theres More Nothing to Say”: Unspeaking Douglas Barbour’s “Story for a Saskatchewan Night”series of borders, blurred boundaries where text might meet an-other: text, or silence, or what cannot be spoken. Allowing this textual body its perforations, its occasional hysteria in the face of nothing, its desire.
