描述This volume contains the papers prepared for the 2nd International Conference on Natural Language Processing, held 2-4 June in Patras, Greece. The conference program features invited talks and submitted papers, c- ering a wide range of NLP areas: text segmentation, morphological analysis, lexical knowledge acquisition and representation, grammar formalism and s- tacticparsing, discourse analysis,languagegeneration,man-machineinteraction, machine translation, word sense disambiguation, and information extraction. The program committee received 71 abstracts, of which unfortunately no more than 50% could be accepted. Every paper was reviewed by at least two reviewers. The fairness of the reviewing process is demonstrated by the broad spread of institutions and countries represented in the accepted papers. So many have contributed to the success of the conference. The primary credit, ofcourse, goes to theauthors andto the invitedspeakers. By theirpapers and their inspired talks they established the quality of the conference. Secondly, thanks should go to the referees and to the program committee members who did a thorough and conscientious job. It was not easy to select the papers to be

Universal Segmentation of Text with the Sumo Formalismuments in any language. Because the processing is independent of the language, any level of segmentation (be it character, word, sentence, paragraph, etc.) can be considered. We will argue about the usefulness of such a formalism, describe the framework for segmentation on which Sumo relies, and giv

Functional Decomposition and Lazy Word-Parsing in Modern Greekern Greek, and it requires computationally effective morphological processors. Various models have been proposed for developing computerized systems to accomplish the task of recognition of morphosyntactic features of words. In this paper there is a description of extending and adapting the model of

Use of a Morphosyntactic Lexicon as the Basis for the Implementation of the Greek Wordnetject. This contribution presents the morphosyntactic lexicon, which will be used as the basis for the development of the whole project. This lexicon was developed within the framework of a spelling correction system. Later on, it was enhanced by adding syntactic information for each lemma and by usi

On Verb Selectional Restrictions: Advantages and Limitationsict the nature of the arguments of a predicate, (2) to detect and resolve sense variations and more generally (3) to be exploited in the composition process. Via several examples, we show the advantages and the limits of such an approach.

Some Principles for Implementing Underspecification in NLP Systemsine the main problematics, and show how Lexical Conceptual Structures can be used, paired with elements from the Generative Lexicon, to deal with meaning variations introduced by arguments w.r.t. the basic sense of a predicate. We develop different forms of underspecification and instantiations and
