Prominent scientists, young researchers and students, convened for two weeks to debate on the newest trends in olefin metathesis and identify future perspectives in this fascinating field of synthetic organic, organometallic and polymer chemistry with diverse potential applications in materials science and technology. Following the fruitful practice of the previous NATO ASI meetings, selected contributions comprising plenary lectures, short communications and posters are compiled in this special volume dedicated to this outstanding international scientific meeting. Ruthenium–Aryloxide Catalysts for Olefin Metathesise best of these catalysts offer activity comparable to or greater than that of the parent chloride (Grubbs) systems in ring-closing metathesis (RCM). Preliminary studies of the electronic nature of the Ru–X bond suggest that the metal center is more electropositive in the aryloxide complexes than in the Grubbs systems.

Olefin Metathesis With Ruthenium-Arene Catalysts Bearing N-Heterocyclic Carbene Ligandshed that the presence of an endocyclic double bond in the carbene ligand central heterocycle was not crucial to achieve high catalytic efficiencies. “Greener Shade of Ruthenium”: New Concepts of Activation, Immobilization, and Recovery of Ruthenium activity by electronic activation. The high stability and good application profiles of such modified catalysts in conjunction with their facile removal from organic products can be expected to offer new opportunities in green applications of olefin metathesis.
