Contact Theory and the History of Englishn contemporary sociolinguistic work in contact situations could equally explain some of the linguistic outcomes that occurred during the development of English in medieval times. We conclude that both approaches offer important insights into the ways that multilingualism has had an impact on the development of English.

Reframing the Interaction between Native Terms and Loanwords: Some Data from Occupational Domains inaset taken from various occupational domains. Results suggest that the relationship between incoming loanwords and native lexis in the Middle English period may be reframed more as one of harmonious co-existence, with the enlarged vocabulary providing the conditions for the early beginnings of lexical standardisation.

We compare and contrast the contact situations in terms of van Coetsem’s (1988) distinction between borrowing and imposition and Trudgill’s (2011) framework of sociolinguistic typology.
