描述.This book traces the emergence of modern pessimism in nineteenth-century France and examines its aesthetic, epistemological, ethical, and political implications. It explores how, since pessimism as a worldview is not empirically verifiable, writers on pessimism shift the discussion to verisimilitude, opening up rich territory for cross-fertilization between philosophy and literature. The book traces debates on pessimism in the nineteenth century among French nonfiction writers who either lauded its promotion of compassion or condemned it for being a sick and unliveable attempt at renunciation. It then examines the way novelists and poets take up and transform these questions by portraying characters in lived situations that serve as testing grounds for the merits or limitations of pessimism. The debate on pessimism that emerged in the nineteenth century is still very much with us, and this book offers an interhistorical argument for embracing pessimism as a way of living well in the world, aesthetically, ethically, and politically..

Introduction, ation and urgently implies an ethics of human solidarity. Relying on verisimilitude rather than verifiability, pessimism bridges the gap between philosophy and literature, and foregrounds the act of meaning-making in the face of suffering.

Schopenhauer: Resignation, Compassion, and Narrative, chopenhauer is foundational for the writers who come after him not only on account of his worldview but also because his style of thinking invites us to consider pessimism via a narrative lens that imaginatively blurs boundaries between philosophy and fiction.

Debates on Pessimism in Late Nineteenth-Century France,an imaginative act that frees pessimism from the accusation of quietism or despair and paves the way for living in an “as if,” a reflective consciousness that makes room for dialectical interplay between fiction and reality.

Pessimism and the Poetic Imagination, permanence of existence. What emerges is a “creative destruction” akin to Hannah Arendt’s characterization of thought as a manifestation of the “two in one” of consciousness. As Laforgue and Emile Verhaeren portray, this split self allows for simultaneous tragedy and comedy, forging an imaginative space where laughter and tears coexist.
