描述This book IS an attempt to review the state-of-the-art in the fields of limnology and of marine biology in the Sudan. The need for it became apparent while we were doing some joint field work in the Nile Valley and along the Red Sea coast. We feel that several reasons justify its publication. Firstly, a vast amount of information is being gathered year after year by the staff of the Hydrobiological Research U nit of the University of Khartoum, in conjunction with the faculties of Medicine and Agriculture of this university; much of this information fails to find an outlet to the scientific literature. Secondly, we did not want to restrict our book to the Nile Valley. The Nile is such a vital life artery to the Sudan that it has dominated limnological efforts in this country, to the neglect of other geographical areas. The same holds true for the field of marine biology, which lags far behind, despite the existence of a marine field laboratory at Suakin and a research institute at Port Sudan. It is hoped that both will develop considerably in the near future.

On the freshwater ostracods (Crustacea, Ostracoda) of the Sudan, with special reference to the Red Sed; . (Masi, 1932) is placed in the synonymy of . (Lindroth, 1953) is recorded for the first time since its original description and is redescribed, while . Rome, 1969 is transferred to .. The zoogeographical composition of this fauna is briefly discussed.

Primary production and respiration of the phytoplankton in the Blue and White Niles at Khartoum0.41 gCm.d. (0.09 mgO.l.h.) in May to 3.74 gCm.d. (0.83 mgO.l.h.) in November. The maximum rates of respiration in the Blue Nile and White Nile were 0.10 and 0.63 mgO.l. h. respectively. The ratios net:gross production were generally higher in the White Nile than in the Blue Nile.

Effects of 2,4-D on mature and juvenile plants of water hyacinth (, (Mart.) Solms)o half the rate of 2,4-D normally used for control of water hyacinth in the Sudan. The lower rate of 2,4-D not only means a considerable reduction in quantity and cost of the consumed herbicide but also a substantial minimisation in the level at which pollution may build up in the White Nile of the Sudan.

Ecological observations on mangroves of the Red Sea shores of the Sudanaccessible locations; salt pans and to a limited extend cutting contribute in part to the process of degradation. The badly damaged aggregations may benefit from protection through control of grazing by nomadic camel tribesmen.

Observations on the effect of the weevils , Warner and , Hustache on the growth of water hyacinth hyacinth plants for a period of 61 days (one generation period) reduced their population growth by 25.4% and 12.7% respectively. The progeny of both species in a mixed culture reduced the growth of the plants by 22.5% in the same period, while in the control the population of the plants increased 136.6%.
