Conditions leading to amputation,ften associated with atherosclerosis. These two conditions are the cause of gangrene in 90% of those requiring amputation. Small artery disease, venous disease, trauma, congenital malformations, malignancies and infection make up a very small proportion of the indications for amputation (Table 3.1).

Often patients showing the best early acceptance of amputation may not be the ones who come to terms with the situation best in the long term. They may later show a delayed depressive reaction.
