Compensation of Doppler Broadening by Velocity-Dependent Light-Shiftse shifted. Perturbation theory shows that the so called light-shift t ε. of the lower level . (which is equal to −ε.) is proportional to the light-intensity I and inversely proportional to the detuning ω.–ω., provided that this detuning is not too small.

High Resolution Two-Photon Spectroscopy of Rb Rydberg Levelsusing a frequency controlled dye laser to study the 5.S-n.S transitions in rubidium. The optical Ramsey technique of separated interactions is used to reduce transit broadening. Narrow resonances of 17 kHz full width half maximum are observed.
