描述In this .Journey to Microbial Worlds. we present thediversity of microorganisms, from the state of fossil microbes inArchaean age rocks to the possibilities of extraterrestrial life. Thisvolume discusses the extremophiles living in harsh environments (fromour anthropocentric point) and describes them in considerable detail. Some chapters also review topics such as symbiosis, bacterialluminescence, methanogens, and petroleum-grown cells. The finalchapters of this book shed new light on astrobiology and speculate onextremophiles as candidates for extraterrestrial life. All chaptersare updated to the latest research level.

Bacterial Habitats in Extreme Environmentsext. In fact, it is likely that the great physiological and phylogenetic diversity of prokaryotes we see today is the result of evolutionary pressure on these organisms to colonize every habitat and every microenvironment within each habitat that will support life.

Snow Algae: ,and ice (Jones 1991) and are involved in the primary production, respiration, nutrient cycling, decomposition, metal accumulation and food webs associated with these habitats (Fjerdingstad et al. 1978, Hoham 1980, Jones 1991, Hoham et al. 1993, Hoham and Duval 1999).

Microbial Diversity and Ecology of Alkaline Environmentsulations flourishing at pH values above 9 have been largely restricted to surveys of prokaryotes (both Bacteria and Archaea), although it is certain (largely from microscopic observation) that there are eukaryotic microbes capable of growth and activity at high pH values — to date these have not been examined in detail.

Anaerobes from Extreme Environments paper describes the microbial diversity of anaerobes isolated from extreme environments. Fig. 1 and Fig. 2 show the phylogenetic distribution of extremophilic anaerobes amongst the . and . domains, respectively.

Sulfur Metabolism among Hyperthermophilesonsidered here. For many of these organisms, we do not know if the organism derives any energy from carrying out sulfur reduction. This review will compare mechanisms of sulfidogenesis in selected hyperthermophiles to highlight features that might shed light on the mechanisms and evolution of this metabolism.

An Oceanographic Perspective on Microbial Life at Low Temperaturesth can outcompete bacterial growth at subzero temperatures), as documented by Pomeroy and Deibel (1986), then the highly efficient food webs, often weighted towards higher trophic levels, that characterize polar marine ecosystems (Petersen and Curtis, 1980) are mechanistically explained.

Anaerobic Chemotrophic Alkaliphilesinto an autonomous community. Insight into the properties of this community may provide us with a better understanding of microbial processes that may have occurred in inland waters of the Proterozoic.
