描述 This biography charts the life and fascinating long militant career of the French anarchist journalist, editor, theorist, writer, campaigner and educator Jean Grave (1854-1939), from the run up to the 1871 Paris Commune to the eve of the Second World War. Through Grave, it explores the history of the French and international anarchist communist movement over seven decades: its “heroic period” (1880-1890s), shaken by terrorist violence and intense repression, the emergence of syndicalism, national and international solidarity campaigns, the divisions over the First World War, and post-war division and relegation. Through Grave, a “sedentary transnationalist,” the study investigates the networked and transnational organisation of the anarchist movement, addressing the paradox of Grave’s international influence alongside his deep rootedness in Paris by emphasizing the movement’s global print culture and staggering circulations.

,The Perils of Mainstreaming? (1895–c. 1905), much-criticised orthodoxy in the face of new anarchist currents such as syndicalism and individualism, contrasting his reluctance to get involved in the Dreyfus Affair with his innovative and skilled pedagogical and campaigning work against “Spanish Atrocities.”

,A Philosopher Among Criminals: Grave and The Era of Propaganda by the Deed (1892–1894),evant to anarchism. His indictment in the highly publicised, catch-all August 1894 Trial of the Thirty triggered a support campaign in his favour, which sealed his status as a well-respected anarchist intellectual.

,A Sedentary Transnationalist (1885–1892),easingly leading to accusations of authoritarianism. The chapter examines Grave’s central contribution to debates over anarchist individualism, illegalism and the terrorist concept of propaganda while a wave of anarchist-inspired political violence and illegal acts hit France.

,The Limitations of Print Activism (1905–1918),whelmingly critical historiography by showing the protracted and complex evolution whereby Grave came to such a striking reversal, emphasising his initial efforts to organise a cross-political pacifist campaign to counteract both French and German militarism.

Introduction: A Networking Anarchist, what at odds with his times. A selflessly dedicated thinker and activist, in a period shaken by anarchist violence and criminality, Grave was a working-class intellectual known for his gentle manners and surly temper. He commanded one of the largest networks in the global anarchist movement at the t
