描述The NATO Advanced Research Workshop on Issues in Acoustic Signal/Image Processing and Recognition was held August 5-9, 1982 at the Cappuccini complex in San Miniato Italy. The Workshop was primarily concerned with the underwater acoustic signal processing and seismic signal analysis and a major effort was made to link these topics with pattern recognition, i~ge processing and artificial intelligence. Major issues and new approaches in these interrelated areas were closely examined in the Workshop. In addition to paper presentations three discussion sessions were held on! (1) spectral analysis in underwater acoustics, (2) seismic wave propaga­ tion, seismic imaging and migration, and seismic inversion, and (3) unresolved issues and future directions. This Proceedings volume includes most presentations made at the Workshop. The publication, like the meeting itself, is unique in the sense that it provides exten­ sive interactions among the closely related areas stated above. Such interactions which usually result in the integration of different systems or approaches are certainly much needed to achieve some performance breakthrough while individual systems or approaches reach their pe

Adaptive Range Tracking of Underwater Maneuvering Targets Using Passive Measurementsem a much greater degree of “robustness” than it previously had. The second benefit is a decoupling of depth estimation from the polar range estimator, which considerably reduces the computational level of the adaptive tracking system.

Implementation of Image Enhancement and Least Squares Filtering Techniques for Acoustic Data of spectral resolution. These are based on extensions of 2-D MEM spectral estimation schemes. Experimental results obtained in processing different real world varying images (in particular given by remote sensing detectors, TV or infrared cameras) are shown, confirming the good performance of the above technique for recognizing several different patterns in observed images

Digital Image Processing by Means of Generalized Scale-Invariant Filtersiant 2-D systems is presented and two different implementation techniques are described, one based on the use of the Mellin transform and the other one exploiting suitable coordinate transformations in conjunction with linear shift-invariant systems.

Acoustical Classification of the Seafloorundary waves can be used. The velocity of a boundary wave depends strongly on the shear velocity structure. In an inhomogeneous medium the boundary waves are dispersive, hence the measurement of velocity as function of frequency can give information about the shear modulus as a function of depth.

Bearing Estimation using Random Arraysliasing (grating lobes) problem of an equally spaced array, and a great deal of array gain can be achieved from a large array of randomly placed sensors. Serious consideration should be given to tracking the locations of drifting sonobuoys so as to coherently process them as an array.
