Book 1996tail, and the centre piece of the book is a guided tour of the pathway itself. An interesting addition to the book is the chapter on the use of Drosophila melanogaster as a genetic system to probe the pathway at the whole organism level. The book is targeted to researchers who have an interest in intracellular signalling.

Signal Transducers and Activators of Transcription: The STAT Proteins, ter 5 for a more detailed description). At present, six mammalian members of the STAT family are known, namely, STAT1. STAT2,. STAT3. also known as acute phase response factor (APRF),. STAT4,. STAT5 (also known as mammary gland factor [MGF]),. and IL-4-STAT. (also known as STAT-6).

These molecules are components in pathways utilising the STAT (Signal Transducers and Activators of Transcription) transcription factors. The basic components of the JAK/STAT pathway are covered in de

Intracellular Signal Transduction,o chemical stimuli upon which they can make relevant developmental and functional decisions. For the purposes of this book, we will only address those issues which are pertinent to the intracellular signal transduction processes triggered by growth factors and cytokines. Our understanding of the mol

STFs: STAT-Containing Transcription Factors, elicited following stimulation of cytokine receptors and PTK receptors.. These STFs were originally revealed by dint of their ability to bind to specific DNA elements (known as STAT-binding elements or SBEs; see below), as demonstrated by electrophoretic mobility shift assays (EMSAs). Although ach
