Propagation of Electromagnetic Waves,III–V semiconductor materials. Of special significance are optical frequencies in the neighborhood of the bandgap, and hence for AlGaAs wavelengths from yellow-red to the near infra-red region of the spectrum, and for InGaAsP corresponding to the infra-red region. We also call optical waves light waves.

Coupling of Modes,perposition of two propagating modes . and . of the same frequency can be written as.where . and . are complex amplitudes, and the plus and minus signs denote backward and forward travelling waves. If the waveguide has perturbations which lead to a refractive index profile dependent on ., there is scattering of energy from the mode.

Electrons in Semiconductors,scussed. In what follows the fundamentals of the quantum theory will be presented, so far as they are relevant for the behavior of electrons in solids. This will therefore cover the band structure, densities of states and occupation probabilities. Quantum structures with constrained particle motion are also considered.
