Measurements of the Atmospheric Background Emission Between 10μ and 100 μfrared astronomy programme at University College London. The instrument used was a Michelson interferometer, flown at night on a balloon from Palestine, Texas during August 1969. Details of the instrument and the methods of data reduction and calibration are given elsewhere [1].

Infrared Interferometry from Satellites erg cm. s. ster/cm. has been achieved. The interferometer on Nimbus 3 operated 3 1/2 months continuously and the instrument on Nimbus 4 recorded more than one million spectra during the first year in orbit.

Performance Tests of InSb and Ge Bolometersd that under these conditions the performance of the InSb detector is better by a factor of ∼25. The indium antimonide detector has been used in the laboratory for high resolution spectroscopy using the polarizing interferometer described by Martin and Puplett [3].
