Although there is currently much controversy surrounding the effects of specific dietary factors on blood pressure, there is a rapidly expanding body of evidence to support a direct role of the diet in the development and treatment of hypertension.

Sugars in human disease: a review of the evidencesugar consumption is already widespread and so it is given the benefit of the doubt. In the language of the American Food and Drugs Administration, it is a GRAS product (generally regarded as safe). In other words it is innocent until proved guilty.

Dietary fibre: the facts?buted to too much refined carbohydrate in the diet or, on the other side of the coin, too little ‘roughage’ or fibre. It was a brilliant idea that was immediately accepted and also an unorthodox idea, in that a low intake of a non-nutrient could shorten our lives.

The food manufacturers’ role and problemst it could all be got down on the average postcard. When I saw the details of the programme I was comforted to see that the ‘real’ experts would be covering the complexities of cholesterol and fat, sugar, fibre and salt.
