Polyagglutination,ane antigens by agglutinins normally present in human sera. The receptors are essential constituents of oligosaccharide chains found in membrane glycoconjugates. They are normally hidden on human erythrocytes but become exposed in polyagglutinable cells. The following types of polyagglutination will be discussed in this chapter.:

Glycoconjugates,ific protein or oligosaccharide structures. In contrast to proteins, carbohydrates and glycoconjugates are barely (and reluctantly) touched upon in chemistry and biochemistry courses. A brief survey of the structures and properties of this substance class is therefore appropriate here.

Biosynthesis of Glycoconjugates,e treated in this book. Little attention is paid, however, to the biosynthesis of glycoconjugates. Since these substances are of pivotal importance for blood group serology, the formation of glycoconjugates will be discussed below in detail.
