Basalt from the Axial Trough of the Red Seas and comparable with that of Ethiopian rift basalts. Their phosphorus and total iron contents are higher than that of oceanic subalkaline basalts and comparable to alkaline basalts of the African Rifts. Petrologically, as structurally, the axial trough of the Red Sea seems to be intermediate between rift valley and ocean.

Temperature Structure of the Red Sea Brinesrp and only about 5m thick..In the Discovery Deep a 4m thick 36°C water overlies a bottom 44°C water. The interface between these layers is not as sharp as that of the Atlantis II Deep..The Chain Deep has water of at least 34°C. Layering may be present; however, the deepest part of this hole was not reached.
