描述Globalization is reshaping the field of health promotion practice. In this innovative study, the authors outline health promotion‘s traditional concerns and argue that ‘a policy of glocalization‘ (thinking globally, acting locally) can succeed in establishing health equality and achieving empowerment individually, locally, nationally and globally. Drawing on international examples across Africa, Asia, Europe and North America, this study analyses economic policies and their link to health, particularly in relation to the developing world. Globalization affects health in varied ways and this book examines the competing ways in which ‘global health‘ has been framed in public policy, concluding by revealing how health promoters can respond to globalization‘s new challenges.

We identify who are the ‘winners and losers’ in an increasingly globalised world and what the implications are for health-promotion practitioners in reshaping globalisation in a healthier direction.

Health Promotion Practice: Power, Empowerment and the Social Determinants of Health,In this chapter we provide an introduction to health promotion practice, politics and ethics and link the three central themes of the book — health, equity and empowerment — in a discussion of the social determinants of health. We conclude with a reflection on what this means for practitioner competencies and ethics.

Pathways to Local Empowerment, unity concern about which people share their ideas and experiences and engage in bringing about some form of personal, political and social change. As we move along the continuum of strategies, however, local empowerment’s translocal links to global issues and networks start to become apparent.
