Irene L. Hudson,Marie R. Keatleyo introduce a branch of mathematics which will be extremely useful. This is matrix algebra, which, as we shall see, enables us to obtain numerical representations of the effects of symmetry operations on molecules. The mathematics introduced will be the minimum needed to appreciate the usefulness of matrices.
