描述This is a wide-ranging book about aspects of the Gothic, from classic texts such as Frankenstein and Wuthering Heights to contemporary fiction by Iain Banks, William Gibson and many others. It approaches the texts through looking at the opposition between the Gothic and the law, suggesting ways in which Gothic at all points produces transgression. It looks at horror fiction by, for example, Stephen King and Robert Bloch, as well as stories from China and Hong Kong, and suggests new ways in which contemporary literary and psychological theory might relate to and address the Gothic.

Resisting Ideological Colonisation,y of the problems which have been with us from the ‘start’. The originating ‘I’ is unfixed, as we have now seen so often in Gothic, hovering phantasmatically between Lockwood and the potential ‘unlocking’ of an authorial persona, itself the withheld subject position of the text.

Here I want to approach instead Robert Bloch’s original story, published in 1959, and to put some specific questions about it in relation to the psychological, and to the text, the body and the law. It needs to be noted at the

Law and Business: Comparative Perspectiveso can fairly claim to represent Gothic most fully in the late twentieth century. In his immensely long fiction . (1988), to take one of many examples, Stephen King offers his readers a highly conventional scenario for horror. An alien spacecraft is discovered buried in the ground; from it there come
