描述By turns radical, uncertain, ambitious and autocratic, Mikhail Gorbachev and his bid to reform the Soviet Union have shaped the contemporary world. This concise and lively book provides an introduction to the man and his times, setting them in the context of a decaying and ramshackle empire and an ideology long since betrayed by its professed followers. Drawing on the latest memoirs and scholarship, this book follows Gorbachev‘s increasingly desperate attempts to control the forces he unleashed and hold together a state whose days were over.

Dietram Schneider,Carmen Zieringerth and losing his place in the script. In Muscovite circles, the assessment of the new General Secretary was ‘.’, ‘he is not the one’. There was a palpable sense that change was in the air, that the times would require a different leader and — judging from Chernenko’s appearance — that they would need him sooner rather than later.

Gorbachev the Technocrat: , and the Attempt to Modernize,v would come to appreciate the enormity of the task facing him, though, and thus develop new strategies. Above all, he would come to question the direction of the USSR’s process. The . of the period 1985–6 would prove a disastrous failure; what it was accelerating the Soviet Union towards was not a glorious future but a precipice.

Gorbachev the Gambler: Democratization,t he was trying to reconcile his divided loyalties. He was a genuinely committed Communist and also a Soviet/Russian patriot. The one required him to stay within the Party and reform it from within, the other to break the Party and thus its dead grip upon the country.
