描述In God and Elizabeth Bishop Cheryl Walker takes the bold step of looking at the work of Elizabeth Bishop as though it might have something fresh to say about religion and poetry. Going wholly against the tide of recent academic practice, especially as applied to Bishop, she delights in presenting herself as an engaged Christian who nevertheless believes that a skeptical modern poet might feed our spiritual hungers. This is a book that reminds us of the rich tradition of religious poetry written in English, at the same time taking delicious detours into realms of humour, social responsibility, and mysticism.

Assent,g to allude to something that readers find hard to pin down. Who is the “ineffable creature,” for example, mentioned in the first stanza, and what is the process of illumination that the beggar in the park experiences? Is this a poem about poetry, about poverty, about enlightenment? What do you think?

The Fall,When I was growing up in the 1950s in Evanston, Illinois, I attended St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, where each week we repeated a prayer that I still mostly know by heart and still find myself repeating in the watches of the night when I cannot sleep.

Time and Eternity, need to remember, with Walt Whitman, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and William Wordsworth, that eternity lies around us every day. Even those who profess no faith in God have had experiences of it—in love, in nature, and in art. Such experiences, of course, are the lifeblood of poetry, and, though poetry se

Suffering Meaning, tion, will, memory, perception—it will inevitably ring itself round with suffering. This is not to say that God demands that we suffer, only that, as we know It better, we inevitably experience a certain withdrawal from the contentments of being and that is painful. However, humans—as Geoffrey Hill

Blessed are the Poor,to injustice. What about our commitment to others, such critics ask; what about the injunction to “do justice and love kindness” as it says in Micah (6:8)? With justice comes the question of earthly rewards and those who are excluded from them, in other words “the poor,” by which, it seems, we are m
