The Brathay Flags of Banishead, Coniston (1:25 000 map SD29),in the Lake District, consisting of uniform, fine-scale alternations of paler silt and darker mud as shown on figure 58. It will be noticed that there are approximately 10 layers per centimetre. The indications are that these striped mudstones accumulated quietly and steadily in a clay-rich sea.

CLAIM

The Bannisdale Slates of Blawith Common and Beacon Tarn (1:25 000 maps SD28 and SD29),he rocks fall within the Bannisdale Slate Formation of Silurian age. They are banded mudstones with occasional massive greywacke sandstone ribs, which are more resistant to erosion and form ridges as indicated on figure 60. The banding in the mudstones is caused by the numerous paler silty laminae.

Whitbarrow and the Carboniferous Limestone (1:25 000 map SD48),opping to investigate. Indeed it compares in beauty with any part of the Lake District, but it is limestone scenery and therefore quite different in character from other areas. A delightful walk starts near Witherslack Hall, and follows the footpath through the woods and on to the limestone pavements of Whitbarrow summit (figures 69 and 70).
