描述The Mediterranean Sea, nestled between Africa, southern Europe, and the Middle East, may be envisioned as a complex picture-puzzle comprising numerous intricate pieces, many of which are already in place. A general image, in terms of science, has emerged, although at this time large gaps are noted and some areas of the picture remain fuzzy and indistinct. In recent years this fascinating, mind-teasing puzzle image has become clearer with individual pieces more easily recognized and rapidly emplaced, largely by means of multidisciplinary and multinational team efforts. In this respect, the Special Program Panel on Marine Sciences of the NATO Scientific Af fairs Division considered the merits of initiating four conferences bearing on the Mediterranean ecosystem. It was suggested that the first, emphasizing geology, should dovetail with subsequent seminars on physical oceanogra phy, marine biology, and ecology and man‘s influence on the natural Medi terranean regime. At a conference held in Banyuls-sur-Mer, France, in August 1979, Profes sor Raimondo Selli was urged by some panel members to initiate an Ad vanced Research Institute (ARI) that would focus primarily on the geologi

Geological Information from Satellite Surveys of the Mediterranean Regioned on satellite images illustrate the existence of all classes of brittle fractures in the upper crust. Lineament patterns suggest the tectonic patterns for a given region, but it is necessary to “field check” any area for which lineament maps are prepared. It is critical that such studies be carrie

Seismicity of the Mediterranean Basinbetween the African and Eurasian plates. This boundary is of a complex nature, and its dynamics are the consequence of the opening of the Atlantic Ocean and the closing of the Mediterranean Sea. Main tectonic features are of compressive character, with only very localized zones undergoing horizontal

Some Boundary Conditions for the Evolution of the Mediterranean RegionGondwanaland. The relative motions of stable Africa relative to stable Europe, and vice versa, have been calculated from recently available data. The motions have been shown as increments and as total displacements. The total displacements have also been calculated for the hotspots frame both for st

Tectonic Evolution of the Tyrrhenian Searoplates from the Upper Cretaceous to the middle Pliocene. During this time span the Tyrrhenian Alps and Apennines were formed. From the Tortonian until the present a process of oceanization by mantle diapirism took place in the Tyrrhenian area associated with an extensional tectonic regime oriented

Structural Features and Basin Tectonics of the Tyrrhenian Sea Its bilateral symmetry, which gives it the character of an interarc basin, is also manifested by the deep crustal configuration that should indicate opposite-vergent arcuate overthrusting (obduction) of the Tyrrhenian oceanic crust onto the Alpine (modern inactive front) and the Apennine (active fr

Recent Geological Evolution of the Adriatic Seae correlated with those on land. For example, the Sabbie di Asti Formation extends offshore from the Po Valley into the Adriatic Basin to the region immediately east of Ancona. Southward, the equivalent unit is the Sabbie di Carassai Formation, composed of basinal turbidites. In the southwestern par

Structure and Evolution of the Central Mediterranean (Pelagian and Ionian Seas)riassic, produced continental rifting with prominent effects in the Streppenosa Trough (Sicily-Malta platform area) and in the Ionian Sea. A second extensional phase occurred in the Middle Jurassic and opened the Ionian Sea and Eastern Mediterranean. The Pelagian Sea and Sirte Rise (excluding the up
