Demystifying Interventional RadiologyThe terms selective pathotoxins and host-specific toxins are used for compounds that affect only those plants within a species that are susceptible to the fungus or other organism that produces them.

The Gene-for-Gene and the Protein-for-Protein Hypotheses,In diseases in which host and pathogen are involved gene for gene, susceptibility involves the copolymerization of protein from the host with protein from the pathogen. In gene-for-gene diseases host and pathogen recognize each other by their proteins. This hypothesis was stated in a brief essay (Vanderplank, 1976). Here we fill in details.

A Molecular Hypothesis of Vertical and Horizontal Resistance,A primary coded protein which is an enzyme or subunit of an enzyme can react in two different ways. It can polymerize (given the necessary hydrophobicity); it can catalyze (given the necessary substrate); or it can do both (when the catalyst is itself a polymer).

us dies after inoculation, but susceptible if it lives, at least for a while. With a soft rot disease, a plant is susceptible if the host cell nucleus dies after inoculation, but resistant if it lives.

The Protein-for-Protein Hypothesis: Temperature Effects and Other Matters,ost-pathogen compatibility, which means host susceptibility, or does it go with host-pathogen incompatibility, which means host resistance? This chapter answers the question unequivocally: copolymerization and susceptibility go together.
