描述.Generating Abstraction Hierarchies. presents a completelyautomated approach to generating abstractions for problem solving. Theabstractions are generated using a tractable, domain-independentalgorithm whose only inputs are the definition of a problem space andthe problem to be solved and whose output is an abstraction hierarchythat is tailored to the particular problem. The algorithm generatesabstraction hierarchies that satisfy the `ordered monotonicity‘property, which guarantees that the structure of an abstract solutionis not changed in the process of refining it. An abstraction hierarchywith this property allows a problem to be decomposed such that thesolution in an abstract space can be held invariant while theremaining parts of a problem are solved. The algorithm for generating abstractions is implemented in a systemcalled ALPINE, which generates abstractions for a hierarchical versionof the PRODIGY problem solver. .Generating AbstractionHierarchies. formally defines this hierarchical problem solvingmethod, shows that under certain assumptions this method can reducethe size of a search space from exponential to linear in the solutionsize, and describes the implementation of t

Hierarchical Problem Solving, ects of a problem first. Most of these problem solvers employ one of three types of abstractions: abstract problem spaces, abstract operators, or macro problem spaces. These three approaches are briefly described below and then compared in more detail in Chapter 6.

Stephen J. Di Martino M.D., Ph.D.The previous chapter described how an abstraction hierarchy can be used for problem solving and showed that the use of abstraction can provide a significant reduction in search. However, several important questions have yet to be addressed: What are the characteristics of a useful abstraction? How do we find useful abstraction hierarchies?

This can result in a significant amount of wasted effort since a problem solver will spend time solving the details only to have to discard the solutions in the process of solving the more difficult aspects.
