Eye Color Mutants and Their Enzymes,dwork for our knowledge of the relation between genes and metabolism. These were some of the earliest experiments that linked genes to a sequence of steps in a metabolic pathway. This work has been reviewed extensively (., 1942; . and ., 1941).

At the same time, our own experience indicated that the literature on such well-defined gene-enzyme systems is widely scattered and not easily accessible. We felt it would be useful to bring together and summarize a substantial proportion of this work. The present book is the result.

Xanthine Dehydrogenase and Related Enzymes,lved in one of the most complex and interesting gene-enzyme systems yet studied in any eukaryote. Reviews of the early work on this system have appeared elsewhere (., 1965; ..., 1968). A more recent discussion may be found in . (1973).

,Amylase (α-1,4-glucan-4-glucanohydrolase, EC 3.2.1.1), regulation of gene function in eukaryotes. The work on this system could well serve as a model for much work on other gene-enzyme systems. Much of the work on amylase has been summarized elsewhere (., 1969b).
