描述This collection provides a comparative analysis of carearrangements in relation to issues of gender and transnationalmigration, social policy and labour migration in East Asia. Bridging thekey topics of migration and gendered cared work through cross countrycomparisons, it examines how care work and welfare arrangements havebeen shaped by national and global forces against the backdrop ofchanging gender relationships, the rise of female labour forceparticipation, low fertility rates and population aging in East Asia. Itparticularly addresses the ‘feminization of migration’ which is asalient feature of migration in Asia today as more women from developingcountries undertake domestic work and care work in Japan, Taiwan, SouthKorea and Hong Kong. Addressing the issue of care inrelation to employment, care and migration regimes in East Asia and theinteraction among welfare regimes, labour markets and work-care balance, this collection provides an up-to-date assessment of genderedtransnational migration in the region and sheds light on local andtransnational policies and practices which aim to improve the welfareof families and migrant workers..

Married Daughters’ Support to Their Parents and Parents-in-Law in Japan mothers. The competing commitment explanation applies more to a husband’s parents than a daughter’s parents. Evidence for the patrilineal norm explanation exists but is weak. Further research on men’s intergenerational support in terms of types of support and lineage is needed, followed by a policy to incorporate men into the family care network.
