Lille and the surrounding towns were then dominated bybig and small family businesses, and many were run by women. Those women didnot withdraw into the parlour as the century progressed and the ‘separateideology’ spread. Neither did they become mere figure heads - most werebusiness persons in their own rights. Yet, they have left almost no traces inthe collective memory, and historians assume they ceased to exist. This booktherefore seeks to answer three interrelated questions: How common were thosewomen, and what kind of business did they run? What factors facilitated orimpeded their activities? And finally, why have they been forgotten, and whyhas their representations in regional and academic history been so at odd withreality? Indirectly, this study also sheds light on the process ofindustrialization in this region, and on industrialists’ strategies.. | 出版日期 | Book 2017 | 关键词 | Business women; Textile industry; Entrepreneurialism; Shopkeeping; Lille-Roubaix-Tourcoing | 版次 | 1 | doi | https://doi.org/10.1057/978-1-137-57413-8 | isbn_ebook | 978-1-137-57413-8 | copyright | The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s) 2017 |
