The Role of Seizures in Kainic Acid Induced Brain Damageental conditions the distant damage is largely due to the spread of paroxysmal discharge and not to a direct action of the toxin (by diffusion). Our studies (Whetsell et al, 1979; Whetsell, 1979; Whetsell and Nicklas, 1980) in organotypic cultures of rat striatum (CA), striatum-plus-frontal cortex (CA-CX) and frontal cortex alone (CX), have demonstrated that the neurotoxic effects of KA can be observed only in CA-CX and CX cultures.

Other sulphonic peptides have similar, though weaker actions. The actions of excitatory amino acid antagonists in depressing polysynaptic and monosynaptic excitation in the spinal cord are described.
