terleukin-3 (IL-3), the colony-stimulating factors (CSF) and erythropoietin (Epo) [8, 13, 62]. While the CSF induce the proliferation and differentiation of the pluripotent and committed progenitor cells [8], maturation of the late erythroid progenitors and erythroid precursors is mainly controlled by Epo [25].

Epo is the principal regulatory hormone of the circulating red cell mass [1,2] and is normally present in minute concentrations in serum at 15–30 milliunits/ml, or approximately 10. . [3–5]. The study of Epo has been hampered for many years by its extreme scarcity and the lack of a convenient assay.

Recombinant Human Erythropoietinttention must be paid to its quality in the sense of a functional replacement of the natural hormone. Accordingly, a detailed comparison of the human urinary extracted form with the recombinant product is given. For better understanding, the efforts at cloning and expression of the hormone in various cellular systems are discussed.

Recombinant Human Erythropoietin and ,-Retinoic Acid Therapy of Anemia in Hemodialysis and Peritonea the deficient production of erythropoietin (EPO) by the kidney [1–3]. This is confirmed by the very recent results concerning recombinant human erythropoietin (rHuEPO) use in uremic dialysis patients, which showed that intravenous administration of this hormone leads to a significant improvement in erythropoiesis [4–6].
