描述This book examines how trauma is experienced and narrated differently across languages and cultures, drawing on rich ethnographic case studies and a novel cognitive-linguistic approach to analyse the variations of English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) used in the narratives of West-African migrants and refugees in the course of intercultural encounters with Italian experts from domain-specific fields of discourse (including legal, medical, religious and cultural professionals). It examines the ways in which such experts interpret the migrants’ trauma narratives by applying discourse conventions from within their communities of practice, as well as their own native linguacultural norms. It argues persuasively for the development of a ‘hybrid ELF mode’ of intercultural communication to be used by experts in charge of unequal encounters in specialized migration contexts that can accommodate different culture-bound categorizations of trauma. This timely and important work will appeal in particular to students and scholars of applied linguistics, discourse analysis, cognitive linguistics, intercultural communication, pragmalinguistics, migration studies and healthcare communication..

Trauma-Narrative Analysis at the Level of Modality, auma narratives at the level of epistemic and deontic modality. It argues that, on the one hand, in the analysed scientific articles on transcultural psychiatry, there is a recurrent use of epistemic modal verbs and ‘hedging’, which diminish the expert writers’ commitment to the truth value of their

Trauma-Narrative Analysis at the Level of Language Typology, strating the deliberate use of the passive voice in the transitive clause structures of Western scientific texts on PTSD in transcultural psychiatry, where trauma symptoms are collocated in a subject position whereas trauma-affected people are defocused at the end of the clause, or are totally omitt

Trauma-Narrative Analysis at the Level of Lexis, in the Western world as a psychiatric problem of the individual, and providing categorizations of trauma symptoms that are resistant to semantic change and meaning negotiation. Trauma-Narrative Analysis at the Level of Pragmalinguistic Schemata, uistic features of the asymmetric interactions through ELF from which non-Western migrants’ trauma narratives emerge as ‘deviations’ from the expected Western schematic knowledge of the discourse of law. Such schematic deviations are assumed to prompt the migrants’ activation of conversation moves t

Trauma-Narrative Analysis at the Level of Sociopragmatic Schemata, the course of unequal encounters within different specialized contexts, can induce, on the one hand, experts to misinterpret migrants’ trauma narratives, and, on the other, migrants to find experts’ specialized discourses inaccessible and unacceptable, thus causing communication failure despite the
