https://doi.org/10.1007/978-94-011-9495-2 in its extent, in the fact that the anti-heroic reaction became a cliché in its own time. No study of the war’s fiction is complete without some examination of the many now-forgotten works which helped to characterise war literature.

The Soldier-Writer as Hero,uous position of the ‘public’ poets of 1914 — Bridges, Newbolt, Hardy, Kipling, Watson, Phillips — was scarcely possible in the Second World War. The disintegration of the soldier’s heroic status involved a reevaluation of the writer’s role and authority.

Sassoon: the Hero Half-Redeemed,, although the incidents and characters are borrowed from actual experience (and their names often only marginally altered),. the trilogy is based on a structuring of events and a presentation of the central character which are independent of autobiography. Sassoon, himself, made this clear in response to criticism from Graves:
